Sun 16th May 12:00 PM 9:00 PM | Laugh With Purpose! From: www.ccsu.edu/cf_news/view.cfm?newsid=460 CCSU Theatre presents: Laugh With Purpose! ( The 7th annual music and comedy extravaganza to benefit The Mayor’s Work Plan to End Homelessness ) May 16th, Noon-9pm at Trinity On Main in Downtown New Britain The workshops and performances are free but patrons are urged to give generously to this worthy cause. For the seventh year members of CCSU’s improv troupe, Schlock Therapy (and the newly formed student club Schlock ) are co-ordinating their energy, time, talent and skill (and money!) to benefit a good cause. Please join them in their belief that laughter can be a healing force. This year, in addition to the local improv and stand-up talent, the joyous a capella music and the Improv Olympiiix championship, we’ve added the brilliance of The Upright Citizen’s Brigade, the nation’s leading well-spring of original comedy.* The fun begins at noon with public improv workshops lead by L A Improv-artist and CCSU alum, Chris Thompson, as well as members of Schlock Therapy, CCSU Theatre’s improv team. At 2pm witness the making--right before your very eyes!!!-- of an epic. Watch Schlock Therapy, and the participants of the 2010 Improv Olympiiix* * create a show from absolutely nothing but your suggestions. After a short intermission, Schlock Therapy will offer a taste of short-form improv to warm the audience up, and then it’s time for the Improv Olympiiix 2010 Championship Round!! Carmine Lavieri, up and coming stand-up artist (and yet another CCSU Theatre alum) does battle with his computer! Followed by the local improv team Sea Tea Improv. Free Lunch, who has DOMINATED this year’s Connecticut Cage Match improv competition (taking place every month at The Playhouse on Park and The Hole In The Wall), will also contribute a set, and in a special reunion performance, Chris Thompson and Colin Longstaff, both CCSU veterans--one making a career in LA, the other in NY, will do a set. TGFI (Too Good For Instruments) the all female a cappella group from CCSU returns for their third year! These girls truly live up to their name with rich, complex vocals, and Divisi, an all-male group, also returns with their soulful and clever repetoire. The newly crowned 2010 Improv Olympiiix champs, fresh from their exclusive, hour-long workshop with The Upright Citizen’s Brigade, lead-off the prime-time set (7pm), followed by The Upright Citizen’s Brigade Touring Company. Yet another CCSU alum and LWP veteran--Manhattan-based stand-up artist Cara Kilduff takes the stage next, and the marathon finishes with a round of Freeze-prov, open to everyone in the house (time permitting). And of course the fabulous staff at Trinity on Main will be on hand to brighten your day, offering warm and cold treats and beverages of every variety (including wine and beer). So come for the marathon or for a few minutes of laughs and make a contribution to the health of our community! Trinity On Main, Sunday May 16th, Noon-9pm. Call 860-832-3152, for info. *The Upright Citizens Brigade (Matt Besser, Amy Poehler, Ian Roberts, and Matt Walsh) came to New York, from Chicago, in 1996. After staging their award winning sketch comedy show, and introducing the long form improvised structure of the "Harold" to New York audiences they began their classes. More recently they have been named "Hot Farm Team" by Rolling Stone magazine and "Best Comedy Club" by AOL, The UCB Theatre is widely recognized as home to today's funniest actors and writers. Among our esteemed alumni include several performers and writers for Saturday Night Live, The Office, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, The Late Show with David Letterman, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, 30 Rock, Best Week Ever, Old School, Blades of Glory, Semi-Pro and countless other films, commercials and television shows. Private Performances:
Our team of professional improvisers can customize a show of just about any length and theme to entertain your guests through made-up on-the-spot stories, characters, and games entirely based on audience suggestions. We’ve performed for fund-raisers, birthday parties, graduation parties, opening ceremonies, holidays, and more. Contact us for options, rates, and references.
Corporate Entertainment:
Whether you’re entertaining employees or customers, our team of professional improvisers will customize a show of just about any length and theme to entertain your audience using their own suggestions. We’ve performed for insurance companies, law firms, financial companies, non-profits, and more. Contact us for options, rates, and references.
What to Expect:
Short-form improvisation usually takes the form of playfully competitive games and scenes based on a large amount of audience suggestions and participation. Popularized by Drew Carey’s “Whose Line Is It Anyway,” short-form is where you might see us perform a Beastie Boys rap about your crappy Thursday, or do a 2- minute film noir about the struggles of an elevator operator. Sea Tea loves short-form because it is a raucous, physical embodiment of both popular culture and traditional stagework. Plus, the audience gets to abuse us quite a lot, which they seem to love.
Long-form improvisation is a series of related scenes and games based off a single audience suggestion. In long-form, players use the single word to get down to the bottom of all of its associations and implications, and build off of those and each other. The product is sometimes a completely improvised three-act play, a complete story, or a series of increasingly brilliant scenes. Sea Tea loves long-form because of the time available to develop complex plotlines, relationships, and patterns. Long-form is not always funny but it is very often mind-blowing. Many of the greatest comedians of our time began by doing long-form: Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Fred Willard, Steve Carrell, Stephen Colbert, Mike Meyers, Chris Farley, Vince Vaughn, and so many more. Long-form has more of a tendency to be strange and uncomfortable, but come along for the ride and we promise you’ll never see anything like it again!
