Hanging with Harold - Weekly Drop-In Jam
Hanging with Harold is not a class or a workshop. It's not a show, either. It's a learn-by-doing drop-in jam where Sea Tea Improv and members of the improv community (that's you, just by showing up!) perform a kind of longform improv together known as the Harold.

"You'll have to do about a hundred Harolds to start feeling comfortable with the form." - Matt Besser, founding member of the Upright Citizens Brigade

We will keep track of the cumulative number of Harolds done by each participant from week to week. Each week, we will do 1, 2 or 3 Harolds (time depending), and everyone who participates will add to their Harold total toward everyone's personal goal of 100 completed Harolds.

We'll be doing this on Thursdays for the rest of 2012, and moving to Wednesdays at 8PM starting in January.

Who will be first to reach 100 Harolds completed?

8-Week Improv Course "The Set List" begins!
The Set List (Focus Level Course in Short Form Improv)
Instructor: Julia Pistell
Cost: $199
Monday evenings from
6:30PM to 9:30PM

So: you know the rules, but does that make you a great quarterback? Or do you feel like you’re constantly on the JV short form team?

In “The Set List,” instructor Julia Pistell will teach you how to play the games you know (and many you don’t) to the very best of your ability. Root out the games within the game, and play to the top of your intelligence no matter if you’re speaking in gibberish, mime, poorly translated Russian, or alphabetical order. We’ll apply advanced scenework techniques to simple games to find the perfect blend of short-form styles and practical theatrical concerns (is there conflict? How’s your stage presence looking?). Make bolder choices, do better scenes, and walk away with a greater understanding of how to have the most fun while using the best part of your brain. Lots of personal feedback in every class. Bring your own strengths and style to short-form games: that’s the goal.

Julia Pistell has co-starred in almost 40 consecutive monthly short-form shows at City Steam Brewery’s Brew-Ha-Ha Comedy Club, as well as over 100 other improv shows with Sea Tea Improv. She is trained by the Upright Citizens Brigade, ImprovBoston, the PIT’s Ali Faranakien, the Hartford Stage, and more. She has been teaching improv for many years, including her current posts at Sea Tea Improv and the Hartford Children’s Theater. Julia also improvises her way through a nationally popular podcast, Literary Disco, and a career in Public Relations and Event Planning at the Mark Twain House & Museum.

Prerequisite: Completion of two “Foundation” level courses (The Scene, The Game, The Character), or completion of one Foundation course & concurrent enrollment in a Foundation course, or permission from Sea Tea Improv.

Class dates:
Monday, January 14
Monday, January 21
Monday, January 28
Monday, February 4
Monday, February 11
Monday, February 18
Monday, February 25
Monday, March 4 (Share from 9PM – 9:30PM)

This course is one of Sea Tea Improv’s 2 “Focus” level adult improv courses: this course, focused on shortform improvisation, and “The Second Beat” (last offered in Fall 2012), focused on longform improvisation.

This course is limited to 16 students.

Make Your Partner Look Good (Valentine's Day Improv Workshop)
Love is patient, love is kind... love makes bold choices and says "yes, and!"

If you're looking for a unique romantic experience this Valentine's Day, look no further-- come to Sea Tea Improv Studios and learn all about spontaneous fun with your date. In this workshop designed for couples of all kinds (first dates or fifty years married, we don't care!), we'll show you how improvisational games can reinforce good communication, listening, flexibility, and most importantly, a sense of humor. Even if you've never improvised before, this workshop will be a blast and give you an experience you'll laugh about together for Valentine's days to come.

And who will be teaching this workshop de l'amour? Two of the co-founders of Sea Tea Improv, Greg Ludovici and Julia Pistell, who have been dating for a decade. Greg and Julia have found great joy and humility in laughing at each other every week, and they can't wait to share that with you. And we promise there won't be massive Shakespearean misunderstandings in which we accidentally poison ourselves at the end of the workshop-- we're more romantic than that, Romeo!

Instructors: Julia Pistell & Greg Ludovici

6:30PM to 8PM

Who will be first to reach 100 Harolds completed?

Get a Clue Tours: Solve a Mystery in Mark Twain's House
The hour-long tours step off every 15 minutes.

Like the stately home where a murder takes place in the classic Parker Brothers/Hasbro game CLUE, the Mark Twain House has a Conservatory, a Dining Room, a Library, even secret passages...all the elements for a live-action mystery involving the characters Mark Twain invented there.

Was it Tom Sawyer in the Library with the Wrench? Merlin in the Billiard Room with the Knife? The Pauper in the Kitchen with the Rope?

In a parody inspired by the great original game, a full-fledged murder mystery will be laid out for visitors to solve during The Mark Twain House & Museum's "Get a Clue" Tour, Saturday, March 9. The one-hour experience provokes fun, intrigue and hilarity among visitors.

The 1874 home's opulent chambers become possible murder scenes in this classic challenge of deductive reasoning and detective skill. In a special one-hour tour, visitors will be able to make accusations and figure out who sent "Pap" Finn -- Huck Finn's drunken, abusive father -- to his doom. And where he was dispatched. And what was used to dispose of the scoundrel.

Moving from room to room in the mysterious gloom of evening, probing dark corners of the house (magnifying glasses optional), visitors will get clues to help them in their detection and make their guesses. Finally, in a stunning reveal, all will become clear and the perpetrator unmasked.

Members of Hartford's beloved, hilarious Sea Tea Improv comedy troupe portray the suspects, who are based on famous literary characters Twain created in the very house where the mystery unfolds.

Tickets are $20 ($16 for members); $13 for children 16 and under. 860-280-3130

Who will be first to reach 100 Harolds completed?

Who will be first to reach 100 Harolds completed?

$5 per person
