Workshop: Tops of Scenes
The first 3 to 5 lines can make or break a scene. Starting off not on the same page with your scene partner causes confusion, bad scene work, and the dreadful jokey crazytown scenes. This workshop will focus on making clear choices at the tops of scenes to better establish your "who, what and where", a.k.a your base reality. A well established, grounded start will make games easier to identify and more playable to the improvisers watching from the back line.

For intermediate and advanced improvisers

Instructor: Joe Leonardo

Cost: $35

About the Instructor: Joe Leonardo is a comedic actor living in New York City with an absurd amount of natural talents including writing ambidextrously, creating children’s southern folk music, and inventing breakfast sandwiches (one’s called the “Cardiac Arrest”). In his spare time when he’s not reciting an unhealthy amount of Beatles trivia or giving truthiness facts about wildlife, he spends it honing his craft of improvisational and sketch comedy at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre and with his improv troupe, Sea Tea Improv. Joe writes and produces sketches with the his sketch groups, Crafts and Arts and Asylum Attic. Joe has logged many hours of training at the UCB Theatre, The People’s Improv Theater, Hartford Stage, and the “streets”, homie! He’s been featured on a majority of Connecticut TV stations, newspapers, and nationally on ESPN, Travel Channel, Anderson Cooper LIVE, and others. Joe also does commercial work and is a frequent guest on The Colin McEnroe Show on NPR. You can see him performing regularly in New York and Connecticut.

Writers, apply to be on our Jurassic Park comedy team!

An open call for writers for Sea Tea Improv's Jurassic Park sketch comedy show.

Sea Tea Improv is looking to put together a collaborative sketch comedy show paying homage to the magic and fun of Jurassic Park. Our vision for the show is an exploration of the comedic themes of the entire movie, with sketches that roughly match up to the scenes in the film so that we end up with a ridiculous funhouse mirror version of the movie (think Space Balls with dinosaurs).

Once we have all our writers, the show's producers will be splitting the movie up into scenes and sections to inspire your sketches, then assigning them to writers and sketch teams. We don't want to see recreations of scenes, but rather sketches that really capture what's funny or weird about particular moments in the film, sketches that embody the heart of what a given scene is about. But feel free to really riff on the movie and let your imagination run wild--do sketches about the film's production, about the outcomes of cloning technology, about Dr. Grant's Rate-my-professor page, whatever! (Really we just don't want to see fifty sketches about someone on a toilet getting eaten by a T-Rex.)

If you have existing sketch ideas or scenes you really want to write a sketch about, let us know your top three choices and we'll work to distribute fun scenes equitably!

Writer criteria:

- Must submit an example sketch (can be totally unrelated to Jurassic Park, this is just to see that you have some sketch comedy experience!).

- Must have experience producing sketch comedy for live performance.

- Must be available for a production meeting Saturday April 11th at 4PM at Sea Tea Improv's studio on Pratt Street. We'll use this meeting to read, rehearse, and finalize sketches and to polish the show into a unified whole.

- Must be available for tech rehearsal at 1PM April 18th, the day of the show.

Apply to participate by March 23rd: goo.gl/forms/1MYhvTRXNB

Writer selection will be announced March 27th.

Sketch drafts due April 9th.

Production meeting April 11th.
